How We Research

Updated on

Every guide here starts with one question: will this hose reel suit the yard, the wall and the hose of the person shopping for it? A small patio and a long backyard need very different reels.

Here is how we work it out.

1. We start with your hose and your space

We ask how long your hose is, whether it's 1/2 or 5/8 inch, and where the reel will live. A brick wall, vinyl siding, a fence post and an open lawn each point to a different type.

When your space rules out a type, we say so plainly.

2. We compare the specs that matter

We check hose capacity, hose size, whether a hose comes in the box, mount type, swivel range, rewind speed and lock, frame material, wheels and handle.

Giraffe Tools, VEVOR, Liberty Garden and Suncast describe their reels in their own words. We name the brand for every claim, and we note the warranty each maker gives.

3. We look at what owners report

We read through what buyers say after using a reel for a season or more. We look for patterns, like a slow rewind, leaks at the inlet, a wobbly cart or a hose guide that jams.

One bad review doesn't sink a reel. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A reel that's great for a long backyard may score lower in a guide about small patios.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep guides current

Hose reels change often, and many come in look-alike sizes with similar names. We check the length and hose size of each model, and we only link new units.

We skip any product with a known recall. When we change a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks come from research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every reel we cover.

Auto-rewind reels hold a wound spring. Guide the hose back by hand, never open the spring housing, and follow the maker's manual for mounting and care.
